What Is Annatto Tocotrienols / Vitamin E?

DeltaGold is an annatto-seed-derived tocotrienol ingredient providing predominantly delta- and gamma-tocotrienols, with essentially no tocopherols. Vitamin E comprises eight distinct isomers — four tocopherols and four tocotrienols — but most vitamin E supplements supply only alpha-tocopherol. Tocotrienols differ from tocopherols by an unsaturated side chain that allows the molecule to interact more readily with cell membranes. Annatto is one of the few plant sources naturally rich in tocotrienols and tocopherol-free, which matters because alpha-tocopherol can interfere with tocotrienol absorption and function. Formulators choose tocotrienol ingredients when the objective is membrane-level antioxidant activity, lipid metabolism support, or healthy-aging formulas that go beyond generic alpha-tocopherol vitamin E.

Tocotrienols vs Tocopherols

Tocopherols and tocotrienols share the same chromanol head but differ in the phytyl tail: tocopherols are saturated, tocotrienols have three double bonds. This unsaturated tail lets tocotrienols distribute more evenly into cell membranes and may support distinct biological effects. Alpha-tocopherol is the dominant form in most supplements, but high alpha-tocopherol intake has been shown in research to competitively reduce tocotrienol uptake. Annatto-derived tocotrienols effectively eliminate this competition by removing tocopherols. For supplement formulation focused on the lesser-studied but increasingly researched tocotrienol isomers — particularly delta and gamma — a tocopherol-free annatto source is the cleanest and most concentrated option.

Evidence Distinction

Research labeled “Branded Ingredient Study” used the named branded material. Research labeled “Ingredient-Level Research” studied the nutrient or ingredient class generally and is informative without implying the same exact material was used. We do not imply a study used a branded ingredient unless the publication identifies it.

Pervez MA, Khan DA, et al.

A 12-week RCT found delta-tocotrienol (DeltaGold annatto tocotrienol) safely improved liver enzymes and inflammatory and oxidative-stress markers in NAFLD patients.

Population:Adults with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
Participants:—
Duration:12 weeks
Dose:Delta-tocotrienol 600 mg/day (300 mg twice daily) vs placebo
Primary Area:Liver enzymes, inflammatory & oxidative-stress markers, hepatic steatosis

Key Finding

Delta-tocotrienol was safe and effectively improved aminotransferase levels and inflammatory and oxidative-stress markers in NAFLD patients.

Clinical study: DeltaGold annatto tocotrienol improves lipid parameters and inflammatory cytokines in hypercholesterolemic adults

Qureshi AA, et al.

British Journal of Medicine and Medical Research

A randomized clinical trial that used the DeltaGold annatto-tocotrienol ingredient reported meaningful reductions in total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides at a 250 mg/day dose over 4 weeks.

Population:Hypercholesterolemic adults
Participants:—
Duration:4 weeks
Dose:Annatto delta-tocotrienol (DeltaGold) 125–750 mg/day
Primary Area:Serum lipid parameters & inflammatory cytokines

Key Finding

An optimal 250 mg/day dose with an AHA Step-1 diet reduced total cholesterol by 15%, LDL cholesterol by 18%, and triglycerides by 14% after 4 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are tocotrienols?

Tocotrienols are one of two families of vitamin E isomers. They share tocopherols’ chromanol head but have an unsaturated side chain that affects membrane interaction.

Are tocotrienols vitamin E?

Yes — tocotrienols are part of the vitamin E family alongside tocopherols. Most supplements supply only alpha-tocopherol.

What is DeltaGold?

DeltaGold is an annatto-derived tocotrienol concentrate supplying primarily delta- and gamma-tocotrienols with minimal to no tocopherols.

What is the best form of vitamin E?

There is no single “best” form — alpha-tocopherol addresses classic vitamin E status, while tocotrienols (especially delta and gamma) support distinct membrane-level functions studied in healthy-aging research.

Why a tocopherol-free tocotrienol?

Alpha-tocopherol can interfere with tocotrienol absorption. A tocopherol-free annatto source avoids this competition.
